Olde Crone - Olde Crone (2009)

Os Olde Crone já não o são. Pouco depois do lançamento deste seu álbum de estreia cessaram funções, o que não deixa de ser estranho visto que as sete músicas que perfazem este "Olde Crone" são boas, revestidas de Stoner/Doom Metal sem grandes floreados, inspirados numa cartilha que nos remete para o enorme legado "sabbathiano", para uns Pentagram e também Electric Wizard - quando lhes dá para o lado psicadélico -, ou Pombagira, por exemplo.

Assim, sem estarmos perante o disco que irá revolucionar as nossas vidas, mas tão somente um bom trabalho que nos irá fazer passar um bom bocado enquanto o ouvimos, à medida que uma boa mão cheia de cervejas desaparece goela abaixo, podemos dizer que este quarteto britânico soube construir temas longos, sóbrios (ou ébrios, conforme os gostos), com algum músculo, com alguns riffs engraçados, mas onde existiu sempre espaço para algum devaneio, com uma piscadela de olho ao Southern Rock, improviso, fugindo aos pergaminhos que ditam a estruturas das canções; eles fizeram um bocado o que lhes deu na real gana, foi o que foi! E isso será sempre de valorizar. "Blue Iris" ou "Olde Crone (Chapter 2)" são reflexo disso mesmo, principalmente no segundo exemplo, onde a par de riffs que tresandam stoner por todos os poros convivem harmoniosamente com passagens acústicas, com um leve travo a Oriente, deixando-nos a pensar sobre as misturas que ainda faltam fazer na música, no Metal mais especificamente. Não, não é que aqui haja algum tipo de novidade! O discorrer do álbum proporciona isso mesmo, essa leve introspecção, por entre os ritmos cadenciados e a tender para o lento e as guitarras duras nos seus main riffs e, igualmente, languidas nas fases mais experimentais.

É pena que, por ora, não tenhamos mais novidades desta banda, porque esta viagem teve piada e gostaríamos de repetir a dose... com novos temas.

Entretanto, abre-se mais uma cerveja (repeat mode on). (14/20)

The Olde Crone already are not. Shortly after the release of their debut album had ceased to function, which does not cease to be odd since the seven songs on this "Olde Crone" being good, coated with Stoner/Doom Metal without major frills, inspired by a booklet that brings us to the enormous sabbathian legacy, and also for some Pentagram and Electric Wizard - when they give to the psychedelic side -, or Pombagira, for example.
Thus, if we were to the disk that will revolutionize our lives, but only a good work we do will have a good time while we hear, as a handful of good beer disappears below the throat, we can say that this british quartet able to build long themes, sober (or drunk, according to taste), with some muscle, with some funny riffs, but where there is always room for a daydream, with a wink to Southern Rock and improvisation, fleeing to the scrolls that dictate the structure of the songs, they did a bit which gave them the “real Ghana” (portuguese expression), was what it was! And it will always be of value. "Blue Iris" or "Olde Crone (Chapter 2)" are a reflection of this, especially in the second example, where the pair of loops that stink from every pore stoner live harmoniously with acoustic passages, with a slight bitterness in the East (!) , leaving us to think about the mixes that have yet to make music, or more specifically in the metal. No, it is here that there is some kind of novelty! The course of the album provides just that, this mild introspection, amid cadenced rhythms and tends to slow and the hard guitar riffs in their main and also faint in most experimental phases.
It is unfortunate that, for now, we have no more news of this band, because this trip was funny and would like to repeat it ... with new themes.
However, it opens another beer (repeat mode on). (14/20)

Jex Thoth - Witness (2010)

O projecto de Jessica Toth regressou aos lançamentos discográficos este ano com um EP, depois de no ano passado ter saído "Totem", mais um EP e em 2008 um split com Pagan Altar e o seu álbum de estreia que granjeou uma boa reacção por parte dos apreciadores de doom mais tradicional e de vertente mais retro e da crítica.
Este registo traz-nos três temas, dois originais e uma cover, e mostra-nos uns Jex Thoth mais psychedelic rock e menos doom; as músicas não são tão pesadas como no registo de estreia, por exemplo, estando directamente elaboradas  para a voz de J. Toth. A melancolia, essa continua bem presente, os ritmos mantêm-se lentos, mas sem o impacto de uma "Nothing Left To Die" ou "Equinox Suite: The Damned And Divine", ou seja, estamos perante temas menores e desinspirados da carreira, curta, desta banda e esperamos que este seja um exercício que tenham em conta para reflexão em futuros registos. A versão de um tema de uma banda obscura como os Slapp Happy, que não acrescenta nada ao anteriormente escrito, a não ser um prolongamento de uma veia mais experimental que a banda desde sempre revelou, revela que "Witness" é um trabalho em que se marca passo até ao próximo álbum do projecto. Não é que os temas sejam maus ou existam outro tipo de falhas, nada disso, o problema é que a banda parece murcha e sem aquela centelha de originalidade e bom gosto com que se mostrou ao mundo há dois anos atrás. Resta esperar por mais novidades da cidade de São Francisco. (10/20)

The project of Jessica Toth returned this year with a new EP, after last year’s “Totem " EP release and in 2008 a split with Pagan Altar after their debut album that gained a good reaction for part of the appraisers of doom more traditional and of slope more front page and of the criticism.
This register brings us three songs, two originals and a cover, and shows us a Jex Thoth more psychedelic rock and fewer doom; the themes are not as heavy as in the register “Jex Thoth”, for example, being straightly prepared for the voice of J. Toth. The melancholy, that one is still quite present, the rhythms remain slow, but without the impact of a " Nothing Left you it Die " or " Equinox Suite: The Damned And Divine ", in other words, we are before uninspired and lesser songs of this band and we wait that this is an exercise what they take into account for reflection in future releases. Not being an extension of a vein more experimental than the band from always revealed, the version of a subject of an obscure band as the Slapp Happy, which does not add anything to previously written shows that “Witness " is a work in which step is even marked to the near album of the project. In fact, these songs are not bad at all or exist another type of faults, anything of that, the problem is that the band seems wilting and without that spark of originality and good taste with which it was shown to the world two years ago. For now, we’ll just sit and wait for more news of the city of Saint Francisco. (10/20)
