Que ondas funéreas são estas que nos chegam do Canadá, onde o horror parece ganhar contornos de belo? Pois é, nascidos das cinzas dos The Mass, os Towards Darkness pulsam vida cinco anos após a estreia 'Solemn'. Por essa altura, assistiu-se a uma viragem contundente na sonoridade da banda, renegando o sludge arrastadão e mergulhando nas negras águas do funeral doom, evidenciando um bom conjunto de ideias e deixando-nos com a legítima curiosidade de perceber até onde nos conseguiriam levar num futuro registo. Longa essa espera, mas eis que 'Barren' rompeu a densa neblina e traz-nos quatro temas carregadinhos de peso e belíssimas atmosferas, com as teclas a ganharem um enorme destaque, criando passagens etéreas que desembocam em ritmos lentos e fortes, numa cadência que abraça as guitarras pungentes e o baixo pulsante.
'The Arrival', é o tema ideal para nos ligar a este manancial de peso, carregado de escuridão e aridez, com um início em crescendo até à eclosão de um som esmagador, mostrando-nos que estão bem à vista as diferenças com o passado; ideias concisas, onde tudo surge no devido lugar sem a noção de que está ali para encher.
'Avenues Of Manipulation' demonstra o equilíbrio mais conseguido neste novo álbum, onde a face mais costumeira do funeral doom convive com as toadas atmosféricas, estendendo-se pelo tema seguinte, ''Holy... Dying... Lifting', que ao mesmo tempo funciona como um intermezzo para a derradeira 'Awakening', onde ao longo dos seus 18 minutos nos envolve no seu manto espesso, numa combinação bem curiosa que poderia resultar da junção de uns Explosions In The Sky com uns Neurosis, novamente num longo crescendo, mas que fica sempre ali muito próximo de algo mais, da catarse final.
Longe de estarmos perante algo novo ou refrescante, 'Barren' acaba por demonstrar que há algo para além de Shape Of Despair, Skepticism e toda a trupe que tem chegado de Leste, às vezes com uma qualidade sofrível.
Sim, é para ouvir novamente, sff! (15.4/20)

funereal waves reaching us from Canada, where the horror seems to take the
shape of beautiful? Indeed, born from the ashes of The Mass, Towards Darkness
beat life five years after the debut 'Solemn'. By that time, there was a
striking shift in the sound of the band, denying the dragged sludge and
plunging into the dark waters of the funeral doom, showing a good set of ideas
and leaving us with legitimate curiosity to see how far they could take in
registration in the future. This long wait, but behold, 'Barren' broke through
the fog and brings us four themes loaded of weight and beautiful atmosphere
with the keys (keyboard) to a very high gain, creating ethereal passages that
lead to slow rhythms and strong, a cadence that embraces the poignant guitars
and throbbing bass.
'The Arrival',
is an ideal track for us to connect with this fountain of weight, full of
darkness and dryness, with a start on growing until the eruption of a sound
overwhelming, showing us that they are clearly visible to the differences with
the past; concise ideas, where everything comes into place without the
conception of what is there to fill.
'Avenues Of
Manipulation' shows more balance achieved in this new album, where the face of
the more customary funeral doom live with the atmospheric tunes, extending the
next theme, ’Holy... Dying... Lifting', which simultaneously acts as a linkage
for the ultimate 'Awakening', which over its 18 minutes involves us in his
black cloak, a very curious combination that could result from a junction of
Explosions In The Sky with some Neurosis band, again growing a long, but there
is always very close to something else, the final catharsis.
Far from that
we are not facing something new or refreshing, 'Barren' turns out to
demonstrate that there is something beyond Shape Of Despair, Skepticism, and
the entire troupe that has come from the East, sometimes with a average
quality.
