Ufomammut - Oro:Opus Primum/Oro: Opus Alter

O lento crescendo de 'Empireum' vai inundando a nossa sala e tomando conta dos sentidos, numa toada hipnótica, marcando o regresso da banda de Tortona aos discos, após o incontornável 'Eve', uma obra maior na discografia dos Ufomammut.

'Oro: Opus Primum' entra assim, de mansinho com mais uma mão cheia de temas que, certamente, nos irão colocar à prova, pois nem tudo é imediato, linear e muito menos simples na sua música.

Há pontos de contacto com o seu antecessor e até ao final do tema de abertura isso parece-nos claro, mas é com 'Aureum' que as coisas começam a tomar rumos ligeiramente diferentes e, ao mesmo tempo, um pouco difusos, uma neblina que se vai instalando e não nos permite vislumbrar que caminho querem seguir. As malhas não são desgarradas, perdidas, desconexas, mas sente-se a necessidade de fugir à cópia e comparação com o passado. Os temas fluem, os ritmos lentos, secos e duros e a repetição quase até à exaustão estão lá; os efeitos, samples e vozes minimais fazem o seu trabalho. Tudo isto corresponde a um peso colossal, como já é hábito, mas fica a sensação de alguma descontinuidade que só é suprimida com 'Oro: Opus Alter', que chega uns meses mais tarde. (13.8/20)

Não, não estamos perante o irmão gémeo de 'Opus Primum', mas antes a sua continuação. A par do pormenor de um claro jogo de palavras presente nos títulos destes cinco novos temas, verifica-se um pormaior, ou seja, uma abordagem mais directa, com riffs monolíticos avassaladores (a recta final de 'Oroborus' é de nos pôr em sentido), sem perdas de tempo com «esquisitices», sem tornar as coisas demasiado cerebrais, mas mantendo uma interligação entre os andamentos, conferindo-lhe uma dimensão mais próxima comparativamente ao seu passado recente. Orgânico e visceral, talvez sejam os adjectivos que melhor se adequem para definir este novo conjunto de «orações», sem deixar de destacar 'Sulphurdew' e a já referida 'Oroborus', momentos de maior inspiração, evocativos da grande qualidade que esta banda tem e da sua capacidade para escrever paisagens sonoras demolidoras.

Muito se tem escrito acerca do timming de lançamento destes dois registos, mas independentemente dessa lana caprina importa salientar que, embora diferentes em algum do seu conteúdo, conjugados, 'Opus Primum' e 'Opus Alter' não infligem mácula no som dos Ufomammut, cimentando a sua posição de destaque no panorama da música extrema.

Agora, ouçam tudo de uma assentada, bem alto, e fiquem com a cabeça a andar à roda. (16.3/20)

The slow growing of 'Empireum' is flooding our room and taking control of the senses, with an hypnotic tune, marking the return of Tortona`s band to records, after the unavoidable 'Eve', a foremost work in the discography of Ufomammut.
'Oro: Opus Primum' comes so softly over a handful of tracks that certainly will test us, because everything is not quiet immediate, linear and much less simple in their music.
There are points of contact with his predecessor and it seems clear to us until the end of the opening theme, but with 'Aureum' things start to take slightly different paths and at the same time, a little fuzzy, a fog that is installing and will not allow us to discern which path they want to follow. The tracks are not stray, lost, disconnected, but feels the need to escape to copy and comparison with the past. The tunes flow and all the slow rhythms, dry and hard and almost repeated until exhaustion are there; effects, samples and minimal voices do their job. All this represents a colossal heaviness, as has become customary, but gets the feeling that some discontinuity is only suppressed with 'Oro: Alter Opus', which comes a few months later. (13.8/20)
No, we are not facing the twin brother of 'Opus Primum', but rather its extension. Alongside the detail of a clear game of words present in the titles of these new five tunes, there is a much more direct approach, with overwhelming monolithic riffs (the final run of 'Oroborus' put us unwinking ) without wasting time with 'oddities', without making things too intellectual, but maintaining a connection between the movements, giving them a closer dimension comparatively to its recent past. Organic and visceral, these adjectives are perhaps well-suited to define this new set of "prayers", while highlighting 'Sulphurdew' and the abovementioned 'Oroborus', moments of special inspiration, evocative of the great quality of this band and their ability to write devastating soundscapes.
Much has been written about the timing of release of these two records, but regardless of this wool goats what really matters, although some difference in some of its content, combined, 'Opus Primum' and 'Opus Alter' do not inflict any stain in the sound of Ufomammut, cementing its position in the extreme music scene.
Now listen all at once, loud, and stay with your head to spin. (16.3/20)

Neurosis - Honor Found In Decay

É já na recta final de 2012 que é lançado um dos álbuns mais aguardados do ano. A expectativa sobre o sucessor de 'Given To The Rising' era enorme; afinal estamos a falar de uma das bandas mais importantes dos últimos 20 anos, no espectro da música pesada (e, atenção que pesada, para o caso concreto do colectivo de Oakland, está bem para além do que a mera música).

Os primeiros 60 minutos de contacto com esta nova proposta foram estranhos, na verdade. 'We All Rage In Gold' até nos transporta para aquele ambiente do seu antecessor, mas volvidos alguns minutos nota-se ali algo diferente. E essa sensação prolonga-se pelos seis temas seguintes. "Que raio! Sensaborão!", é a nossa exclamação após o impacto. Mas, o facto, é que há discos que crescem com o tempo, com a aturada atenção que lhes dispensamos e o entendimento, que julgamos obter, do que se pretende a cada lançamento por parte da banda. 'Honor Found In Decay' é, de certo modo, diferente - não no sentido de quebra da repetição -, mais maduro; é o álbum que se faz quando é atingido um determinado patamar, o da excelência entenda-se, e tudo o que se tem para a oferecer está ali, despido na simplicidade, honestidade e savoir faire; em suma, a grandeza. 'My Heart For Deliverance' e 'Casting Of The Ages' poderão ser dos melhores exemplos disso mesmo.

Ao fim de uma boa dezena de audições, vemos o décimo primeiro longa-duração dos Neurosis sob outro prisma: não o do imediatismo e da continuidade, mas sim a busca de algo maior. Não é um resumo nem o baralhar e voltar a dar. É aquilo que não se consegue explicar, mas está ali tão escancarado naqueles sons e palavras. (18/20)

It is now in the final stretch of 2012, which is released one of the most anticipated albums of the year. The expectation on the successor of 'Given To The Rising' was huge; after all, we are talking about one of the most important bands of the last 20 years, in the spectrum of heavy music (and attention that «heavy», to the case of the collective from Oakland, is well beyond from what is simple music).
The first 60 minutes of contact with this new proposal were strange indeed. 'We All In Rage Gold' transports us to the atmosphere of its predecessor, but a few minutes ware we note there is something different. And this feeling extends during the following six tracks. "What the hell! Tasteless!", it is our exclamation after the impact, but, the fact is there are records that grow over time, with devoted attention we dispense to them and the comprehension, which we think obtained, of what is desired by each release of the band. 'Honor Found In Decay' is somehow different - not in the sense of breaking the repetition of the formula -, more mature, the album is what you do when a certain threshold is reached, the excellence one, and all that has to offer is there, naked in simplicity, honesty and savoir faire; in conclusion, greatness. 'My Heart For Deliverance' and 'Casting Of The Ages' may be the best examples of this.
After a good dozen hearings, we see the eleventh album of Neurosis in a different perception: not the immediacy and continuity, but the pursuit of something greater. It is not a summary or the shuffling and giving back. It's what you can not explain, but there is so barefaced in those sounds and words. (18/20)

Neurosis - Live At Roadburn 2007 (2010)

Tilburg e Roadburn. Desde 1999 que estas duas palavras surgem quase sempre associadas quando o assunto é música, embora somente a partir de 2004/2005 é que este festival tenha adquirido as dimensões (em todos os sentidos), por que hoje é conhecido. Um projecto de elevada qualidade, com cartazes marcantes que juntam bandas de diferentes sonoridades, nomes sonantes que partilham o palco com outros em ascensão no panorama metálico. E, acima de tudo, concertos memoráveis.

2007 foi o ano que viu a chegada do sucessor de "The Eye Of Every Storm", "Given To The Rising" de seu nome e a passagem dos Neurosis pelo "happening" holandês mostrou-se imperativa.

A rodela que nos chega agora às mãos, por intermédio da Neurot Recordings, é o documento desse momento de pura catarse e contemplação repartido em nove andamentos.

O alinhamento, essencialmente baseado nos dois últimos trabalhos de estúdio e deixando de lado trabalhos como "Through Silver In Blood" e "Enemy Of The Sun", mostra a banda de Scott Kelly e Steve Von Till num bom momento de forma, em promoção ao seu último registo, embora com uma grande tendência para abordagens mais introspectivas, vertente mais explorada pelo colectivo ao longo destes últimos anos (ouça-se "A Season In The Sky" ou "Crawl Back In"), que vão sendo intercaladas por temas que se movem em águas mais revoltas.

No entanto, os níveis de qualidade de prestação da banda estão sempre em patamares bem altos, não defraudando minimamente o ouvinte (a magia de "Burn" ou "Water is Not Enough", são prova disso mesmo). E outra coisa não seria de esperar, embora alguns temas que consideramos obrigatórios aqui não marquem a sua presença; mas perante um extenso e excelente catálogo nada há a fazer.  (15/20)

Since 1999 that these two words appear nearly always associated when the subject is music, though it is only since 2004/2005, years when this festival has acquired the dimensions (in all the senses), for which today it is known. A project of elevated quality, with outstanding band lineups that join different kinds of sounds inside of Metal, sonant names that share the stage with others in ascent in the metal scene. And, above all, memorable concerts.
2007 was the year that saw the arrival of the successor of "The Eye Of Every Storm", "Given To The Rising" was it’s name and the passage of Neurosis by this Dutch "happening" appeared imperative.
This cd that reaches now our hands, through Neurot Recordings, is the document of this moment of pure purgation and contemplation, distributed in nine outstanding pieces.
The alignment, essentially based on the last two studio works and setting aside albuns as "Through Silver In Blood" and "Enemy Of The Sun", shows the band of Scott Kelly and Steve Von Till at a good moment of form, in promotion to their last full-lenght, though with a great tendency for more introspective approaches, slope more explored by the collective along these last years (you can hear it clearly in "The Season In The Sky" or "Crawl Back In"), which are mixed with themes that move in more turbulent waters.
However, the quality levels of the band are always in quite high landings, not defrauding minimally the listener (the magic of "Burn" or "Water is Not Enough", are a proof of that, itself). And another thing would not be of waiting, though some songs that we find imperative here do not mark its presence; but with such an huge, extensive and excellent catalogue we can do nothing. Shrinebuilder - Shrinebuilder (2009)

Se juntarmos na mesma sala de ensaios Scott Kelly (Neurosis), Scott Weinrich (St. Vitus), Al Cisneros (Sleep/Om) e Dale Crover (Melvins), o resultado é o que se apresenta: um verdadeiro super-projecto, completamente descomprometido, que nos mostra umas malhas carregadinhas de stoner/sludge, a que se acrescenta uma boa dose de psicadélia. Portanto, não será nada de inovador, mas o que se pode ouvir nestes 4 temas (a versão final terá mais um, "Science Of Anger") é feito com mestria, garantindo-nos a possibilidade de passar um bom tempo com este registo. Nesta meia-hora de som, destaque para "Blind For All To See", um tema que arranca um certo protagonismo exactamente por escapar um pouco à bitola que rege os restantes temas; ou seja, ao longo destes 7 minutos reina a calmaria, assente numa linha de baixo proeminente e envolvente e num ritmo de bateria simples, quase indie. Essa calmaria transporta um bom período de experimentalismo/psicadélia, substituindo a voz de Kelly que, nas curtas incursões que efectua, apresenta um tom bem melódico, como que a planar sobre a estrutura musical.

Estes Shrinebuilder, possivelmente, não estarão no topo da lista de prioridades dos seus membros, dada a relevância e quantidade de projectos que abraçam, mas esta amostra permitirá sonhar com mais alguma coisa. Assim penso eu... (15/20)
