Três anos depois do reencontro com os bons discos, através do lançamento de "Witchcult Today", os britânicos Electric Wizard regressam neste final de ano com "Black Masses".
Este novo registo da banda liderada por Jus Oborn e Liz Buckingham, apresenta-nos mais oito temas que percorrem as tradicionais paragens (ou será melhor viagens?) a que o colectivo nos tem habituado ao longo de quinze anos de carreira, ou seja, Stoner/Doom Metal com uma forte propensão para a introdução de elementos mais psicadélicos, um som bafiento, um cenário enevoado pelo denso fumo que povoam sempre estes registos e histórias onde imperam as drogas, o oculto e o horror.
Missão difícil esta de suceder ao melhor trabalho depois de "Dopethrone", portanto.
A fórmula aqui empregue não foge aos ditames que já conhecemos; o que aqui temos é, na realidade, uma mistura do que Oborn foi criando, aqui numa espécie de "baralha e volta a dar". Os temas acima da média não são coisa rara: o tema que dá título a este registo, a que se segue "The Nightchild" ou a mais experimental "Satyr IX" provam isso mesmo; a capacidade de escrever grandes temas continua incólume; no entanto, essa qualidade não se espalha por todo o trabalho, encontrando-se aqui e ali alguns fillers, "Venus In Furs" e "Turn Off Your Mind", por exemplo, não garantindo o mesmo impacto que "Witchcult Today" teve (embora o contexto também seja bem diferente, ressalve-se esse ponto), para além de uma homogeneidade mais palpável que assegurou um ressurgimento em grande deste colosso.
Muito longe de poder ser visto como um trabalho menor na discografia da banda, "Black Masses" acaba por juntar o que muito bem e menos bem foi fazendo durante estes anos, resultando num álbum que será tolerado facilmente pelos seus seguidores e uma faca de dois gumes para quem prestar o primeiro contacto com este projecto. Mas a música tem destas coisas e resta-nos aproveitar a qualidade que emana ali para os lados de Dorset. (13/20)

Three years after the reunion with good records, by releasing "Witchcult Today", the British Electric Wizard are returning this season with "Black Masses".
This new recording of the band led by Jus Oborn, and Liz Buckingham, presents us eight songs that run through the traditional stops (or should one travel?) that the collective has accustomed us over fifteen years of career, of Stoner/Doom Metal with a strong propensity for the introduction of the most psychedelic, sound stale, a misty landscape by dense smoke that populate these records and stories always prevail where the drugs, the occult and horror.
Difficult this mission to succeed to the best work after "Dopethrone" therefore,
the formula used here does not escape the dictates that we already know, what we have here is actually a mixture of what Oborn was created here a sort of "shuffling and giving back." The topics above the average are not rare thing: a theme that gives title to this record, the following "The Nightchild" or the more experimental "Satyr IX" prove it, the ability to write great themes has survived, however that quality does not spread throughout the work, and there is some fillers here and there, "Venus In Furs" and "Turn Off Your Mind," for example, not guaranteeing the same impact as "Witchcult Today" had (although the context is also very different, it is emphasized that point), in addition to a more tangible, which ensured homogeneity a major resurgence in this colossus.
Very far from being seen as a minor work in the discography of the band, "Black Masses" eventually join that very well and was doing less well during these years, resulting in an album that is easily tolerated by his followers and a knife from two edged sword for those who provide the first contact with this project. But the song has these things and we can only enjoy the quality that emanates from there to the side of Dorset. (13/20)
