Quase dois anos após o lançamento de "Blood Of Bacchus", os portugueses Ava Inferi regressam ás lides discográficas com mais um punhado de temas na senda do Gothic/Doom Metal, sempre bem melancólico, embalados pela voz de Carmen Simões e pelas seis cordas de Rune Eriksen. Quem já tomou contacto com anteriores trabalhos da banda não ficará totalmente surpreendido com o que irá ouvir. No entanto, este quarto longa-duração evidencia um estado de maturação considerável, em que este "Onyx" demonstra a banda a chegar a um estado adulto, com ideias bem delineadas, trabalhadas e qualitativamente significativas. Se olharmos para trás, desde o primeiro registo, em 2006, "Burdens", veremos uma notória mas segura evolução musical, à medida que o som dos Ava Inferi foi sendo forjado, sempre assente no trabalho de guitarra de Eriksen e na voz de Carmen, os pilares deste projecto.
Numa primeira audição, nota-se que não existem por aqui temas "orelhudos" como "Last Sign Of Summer", "Be Damned" ou "Viola", mas à medida que vamos interiorizando estas composições registamos uma grande coesão entre todos os oito temas que compõem esta nova proposta, resultando num todo homogéneo, mas sem perder pitada da identidade da banda. De facto, este talvez seja o álbum que de melhor forma cristaliza o som da banda.
Um outro aspecto que ressalta neste "Onyx" é a inexistência de temas em português, notória, dada a qualidade das músicas gravadas em trabalhos anteriores e que em muito espelham a melancolia sonora da banda; não podemos negar que esperaríamos um ou dois temas na língua de Pessoa, mas pérolas como "((Ghostlights))" ou "The Heathen Island" fazem-nos simplesmente ouvir repetidamente este álbum e degustar cada momento, descobrindo novos pormenores numa das obras de referência lançadas em território nacional. Almost two years after the release of "Blood Of Bacchus", the Portugueses Ava Inferi always return with one more handful of songs in the path of the Gothic/Doom Metal, quite melancholic, dandled by the voice of Carmen Simões and the six strings of Rune Eriksen. Those who already took contact with previous works of the band will not be totally surprised with what they will be going to hear. However, this fourth record shows a state of considerable maturing up, in which "Onyx" demonstrates the band reaching to an adult state, with quite outlined, worked and qualitatively significant ideas. If we look backwards, from the first register, in 2006, "Burdens", we will see the well-known one but safe musical evolution, while the sound of Ava Inferi was forged, always suit the work of guitar of Eriksen and Carmen's voice, the pillars of this project.
In a first audition, we can perceive that there are not much songs that we could choose them as singles, instantly, like "Last Sign Of Summer", "Be Damned" or "Viola", but while we are internalizing these compositions one can register a great cohesion between all the eight songs that compose this new proposal, very homogeneous, but without losing pinch of the identity of the band. In fact, this perhaps is the album that in the better form crystallizes the sound of the band.
Another aspect that must be emphasized on this " Onyx " is the non-existence of songs in Portuguese, one that can be well noticed, because they showed a high level of qualitywhen the quality in previous albums and, perhaps, are the perfect mirror to the resonant sadness of the band; we cannot deny that we were waiting for one or two compositions in the language of Fernando Pessoa, but pearls I eat "((Ghostlights))" or "The Heathen Island" makes us hear simply, repeatedly, this album and taste each moment, discovering new details in one of the reference albums launched in portuguese territory.
