Os suecos Grand Magus têm sido sinónimo de elevada qualidade, pelo menos, desde 2003, altura em foi lançado o colossal "Monument". Temas como "Summer Solstice", Baptised In Fire" ou "He Who Seeks Shall Find" são referências obrigatórias neste disco, por exemplo e presença constante nos concertos da banda.
Com "Iron Will", de 2008, notamos que "JB" e comparsas começaram a mover-se mais na direcção do Heavy-Metal sem, no entanto, perderem pitada da sua identidade ou do seu poder. A vertente Doom continuava bem presente e em boa forma, sendo o tema-título ou "Beyond Good And Evil" exemplos disso mesmo.
Não será, portanto, descabido poder afirmar que, perante o cenário estabelecido pelo trio sueco, as expectativas relativamente a um novo lançamento eram altas, ou seja, conseguir perceber se estávamos perante uma singular incursão por terrenos menos comuns ao som da banda, retornando agora ao que nos vinha habituando ou, pelo contrário, se existia uma clara intenção de ir deixando cada vez mais de lado o som que os deu a conhecer ao mundo, progredindo numa direcção mais ligada ao Heavy-Metal.
As dúvidas ficam quase totalmente desfeitas ao fim dos primeiros segundos de "I, The Jury", o single de avanço, quando a voz de "JB" soa num grito quase Halfordiano. As músicas que se seguem comprovam que "Hammer Of The North" é o disco mais Heavy e menos Doom, apesar de continuar intacta a qualidade instrumental e vocal da banda. Estão lá os grandes temas, enormes malhas de guitarra, os refrões que devem ser berrados a plenos pulmões pelos fãs nos concertos e ninguém sairá, mais uma vez, defraudado após ouvir esta novidade, porque os bons trabalhos notam-se à légua pelos que sabem apreciar uma boa dose de Metal, apesar de ser evidente que não consegue atingir a excelência de "Monument" ou "Wolf's Return".
"Hammer Of The North" – o tema -, irá direitinho para o patamar dos clássicos da banda, após algumas rodagens pelos palcos e "The Lord Of Lies" é mais um daqueles temas bem típicos dos Grand Magus, que mistura o peso e a melodia sempre em proporções que muitos poucos hoje conseguem fazer.
Na verdade, as expectativas ao primeiro embate foram um defraudadas, mas a percepção instantânea de mais um conjunto de grandes músicas fizeram esquecer essa parcial desilusão. Mais uma vez, recomendado. (17/20)

The swedish Grand Magus have been a synonym of high quality, at least since 2003, when the colossal "Monument" was released. Songs like "Summer Solstice", “Baptised In Fire" or "He Who Seeks Shall Find", for example, are compulsory references in this disc and a constant presence in this band’s concerts.
With the 2008 "Iron Will", we noticed that "JB" and his partners began to move more in the direction of Heavy-Metal without, however, losing a pinch of his identity or of his power. The slope Doom was still quite present and in a good form, being the title song or "Beyond Good And Evil" examples of that fact.
So, it will not be improper to state that, before the scenario established by the swedish trio, the expectations regarding a new album were high, or in other words, to be able to realize if we were before a singular raid for less common lands to the sound of the band, returning now to what we were getting used to or, on the contrary, there was a clear intention of being set more and more aside to the sound that introduced this band to the world, progressing in a direction more connected to Heavy-Metal.
The doubts were almost totally cleared after the first seconds of "I, The Jury", the first single, when the voice of "JB" strikes in a scream that Halford has written everywhere. The following songs prove that "Hammer Of The North" is a more Heavy and less Doom album, although the instrumental and vocal quality of the band continue to be intact. There are great songs, enormous meshes of guitar, refrains that must be bellowed to full lungs by the fans in the concerts and nobody will take this time as lost or feel embezzled when they hear this novelty, because good works are noticed by all those who are ready for a good dose of Metal, in spite of being obvious that this record does not manage to reach the excellence of "Monument" or "Wolf's Return".
"Hammer Of The North" will go straight to the list of band classics, after some wheel-works for the stages and "The Lord Of Lies" is another one of those quite typical subjects of the Grand Magus, which always mix the weight and the melody in proportions that few people manage to do today.
In fact, at first sight one’s expectations were a bit defrauded, but the instant perception of another set of great musicians made everyone forget this partial disillusionment. This album is recommended, once again. (17/20)
